Packing for Jodhpur is packing for two cities: the one in winter (cold mornings, burning middays) and the one in summer (an oven with a festival of dust). This list splits by season, then covers the things every season needs.
October–March (the season most visitors come)
- A real jacket or fleece — December–January dawns sit near 8°C, and fort mornings are the coldest hour of your day.
- Layers, not bulk — afternoons climb to 24–27°C; you’ll shed the jacket by 11 and want it back by 6.
- Sun protection anyway — the Thar sun burns through cool air; hat, sunscreen, sunglasses stay.
- Broken-in walking shoes — the old city is stone lanes, fort ramps and stairs. Brand-new shoes are a Jodhpur tradition of regret.
April–June (summer) and July–September (monsoon)
- Loose, light, covering clothes — linen and cotton that keep the sun off. The heat makes bare skin a worse idea than covered.
- ORS sachets and electrolytes — from any Indian pharmacy for pennies; the single highest-value item in a summer bag.
- Monsoon additions: quick-dry everything, an umbrella (rain bursts are brief but violent), waterproof phone pouch, and mosquito repellent for the evenings.
Every season
- Temple-modest options: shoulders-and-knees coverage for Mehrangarh’s Chamunda temple, Jaswant Thada and the old-city shrines; shoes you can slip off constantly.
- Scarf/kurta buy-local option: the markets sell kurtas cheap — many travellers pack light and buy their Jodhpur wardrobe here (our textile guide says where).
- Power bank — long sightseeing days, maps, and socket roulette in older guesthouses.
- Photocopies/photos of your passport and visa — hotels, SIM registration (see the SIM guide), and rail tickets all want them.
- Small notes — ₹100s and ₹200s for autos, stalls and tips; nobody ever has change for ₹500.
- Basic meds: rehydration salts, paracetamol, stomach settlers, plasters — pharmacies are everywhere, but not at 6 AM on a fort ramp.
What NOT to pack
- Heavy winter gear — Rajasthan cold is a morning event, not an expedition.
- White anything for Holi week, or your finest shoes for the lanes — the dust is a pigment and the streets are streets.
- A hairdryer’s worth of expectations in budget heritage rooms — voltage and sockets vary; a travel adapter with surge protection earns its slot.
Questions worth asking
Can I buy forgotten things in Jodhpur?
Almost everything — clothes, scarves, meds, adapters are all market-available. The things worth carrying in are broken-in shoes, prescriptions, and your patience for the sun.
Is drone photography allowed?
Not casually — forts and the airport zone are restricted; don’t pack the drone for Jodhpur without checking current rules per site.
