Getting connected in Jodhpur is easy if you know the two paths: a travel eSIM bought before you fly (instant, zero paperwork, right for short trips) or a local prepaid SIM (cheapest for stays over two weeks, but it wants your passport and some patience). Here’s the decision tree and the process.
Option 1: the travel eSIM (short trips)
International eSIM providers (Airalo, Holafly and similar) sell India data packs in roughly the โน200โ500 band for tourist-sized allowances โ bought online, activated on landing, no paperwork. For trips under three weeks, traveller consensus treats this as the sensible default: you land connected, UPI-style payments can be set up, and you never queue at a carrier store. The trade-off: per-GB cost runs above local rates, and a local number (for OTPs from Indian services) isn’t included.
Option 2: the local SIM (longer stays)
Jio and Airtel dominate coverage in Rajasthan; their tourist-friendly prepaid packs have run around โน299โ349 for 28 days with generous daily data (approx โ packs change). The process:
- Bring passport, visa and your hotel address. Registration is mandatory for foreigners, and the SIM is issued against the passport.
- Buy at an official carrier store rather than the airport counter (pricier) or random stalls (occasionally sketchy). Jodhpur has carrier stores in the main markets; airport counters exist for arrivals.
- Activation takes hours to a day โ the passport verification happens server-side. Buy on day one; don’t expect instant service.
- Reported friction: Jio’s tourist process has a reputation for being the fiddliest; Airtel is the commonly recommended smoother path for short-term foreigners.
Coverage notes for Jodhpur specifically
The city, highways and major day-trip roads are well covered by both networks. The pockets that thin out: inside thick-walled heritage buildings (a Jodhpur classic), the deep old-city lanes, and remote stretches of the Bishnoi-village and Osian runs. Wi-Fi at your hotel is the backup โ confirm it exists before booking budget heritage stays.
Questions worth asking
Do I need an Indian number?
Only for services that SMS Indian numbers โ local bookings rarely require it; train tickets booked online work with international numbers (see our IRCTC guide). Data is the real need; the eSIM covers it.
Can I use UPI as a foreigner?
Increasingly yes โ international numbers can register on UPI apps with supported banks, and even without it, QR-based payments via wallets or plain cards cover most situations. Cash remains the autos-and-stalls fallback (see our money guide).
