Travelling Jodhpur with children changes the where-to-stay math: pools start outranking views, parking outranks charm, and the 9 PM lane-noise question becomes a 7 PM bedtime question. Our family guide covers the days; this one answers the bed.

The family hierarchy

Best overall: the new-city and Ratanada hotels with pools and parking. Space for the family to spread, reliable power and water, cars at the door, and the fort a short auto ride away. This is our area guide’s “quiet south” argument, resolved for families: comfort wins when children are the travellers.

The wildcard: old-city heritage havelis with courtyards. Kids adore them — the towers, the parrots, the breakfast in a 200-year-old courtyard — and family rooms in heritage properties often sleep four comfortably. The screening questions: courtyard-facing room (lane noise), ground-or-low floor (stairs with luggage and toddlers), and the car-drop distance (some lanes mean a walk with bags and children — ask exactly how far).

The pool tier: new-city resort hotels. For summer trips especially (our summer guide), the pool isn’t a luxury — it’s the afternoon’s activity, the motivation for the morning’s sightseeing, and the difference between a whiny evening and a sleeping child.

Questions worth asking

Would a family ever pick the old city?

Yes — school-age kids who can walk, in winter, in a courtyard-facing heritage room, is a genuinely magical stay. The formula breaks with toddlers in summer, not with families as a category.
