Self-driving in Rajasthan is the trip style that buys freedom and charges for it in adrenaline. This guide covers the rental mechanics in Jodhpur โ who rents, what it costs, what paperwork appears โ and then the honest part: whether you should.
The rental mechanics
- Who rents: app-based platforms (Zoomcar for cars, RenTrip for bikes and cars) and the local agencies around Station Road (our transport guide names the long-standing ones) โ self-drive cars, scooters and motorcycles by the day.
- Paperwork: driving licence (foreign travellers need an International Driving Permit), a government ID, and a security deposit โ cash or blocked, by platform.
- Costs (approx): scooters from a few hundred rupees a day; cars from around โน1,500โ3,000 depending on category and season; fuel extra; late-return and damage clauses worth reading twice.
Should you self-drive?
Yes, if: you’ve driven in Indian traffic before, your routes are highway-and-small-town (Jaisalmer, Ranakpur, the village circuits), and you value schedule freedom above all else. The highway legs out of Jodhpur are the easy part โ good surfaces, light by metro standards.
No, if: this is your first Indian driving experience โ the old city’s lanes are scooter-anarchy, the night highways carry unlit trucks and cattle, and a car-and-driver costs so little (see the rates) that the splurge is barely a splurge. The maths locals understand: the driver knows the route, the parking, the police checkposts and the chai stops. You know none of those yet.
If you do drive: the field rules
- Daylight only on intercity legs โ night driving in the Thar is the genuinely dangerous version.
- Photograph the car at pickup โ every panel, every scratch โ before the deposit conversation can go wrong later.
- Tolls and fuel: highways are tolled, fuel is pay-first at many pumps, and the app-navigation of rural turns is optimistic โ the paper-question habit (“is this the Osian road?”) still works brilliantly.
Questions worth asking
Scooter or car for the old city?
Neither, for a first-timer: the old city is walkable and the fort is an auto ride. Scooters reward experienced Indian-traffic riders; everyone else will remember the trip better without the near-misses.
