The palace wedding is Jodhpur’s signature export: marriages hosted inside buildings that out-rank European castles, with the royal family sometimes in attendance next door. This guide details the palace-tier venues and what booking one actually involves.
Umaid Bhawan Palace (Taj)
The apex. Weddings here happen in the palace’s lawns and halls with the Art Deco dome as the permanent witness, and the royal family’s private wing next door as the provenance. What to know: guest capacity is real-venue-scale but the rates are stratospheric (the stay guide carries the nightly bands), the Taj wedding team runs the process end-to-end, and dates book a year-plus ahead for peak season. The museum-wing compromise: high tea and dinner events at palace scale without the full wedding budget (see the palace guide).
The other palace experiences
- Bal Samand and Sardar Samand (WelcomHeritage); the lake-palace weddings: sandstone settings on water, garden functions, and the fortress-palace atmosphere without Umaid Bhawan’s rate card (both in our lake-palace guides).
- The fort-adjacent palace nights; RAAS and the old-city heritage venues host wedding events with Mehrangarh floodlit as the permanent decor. Intimate scale, dramatic result.
What booking a palace wedding involves
- Lead time: 12–18 months for peak-season dates at the top tier, the venue calendar is the first contract, not the last.
- Exclusivity structure: most palace venues require full-property buyouts for wedding dates (rooms block, functions book), the accommodation minimum is part of the negotiation.
- The vendor list: palace venues work with approved caterers/decorators; outside vendors need permissions. The Taj tier manages everything in-house.
- Guest logistics: airport transfers (the airport guide), room blocks, and the excursions (a fort tour is the standard guest event), the destination-wedding layer that planners handle.
Questions worth asking
Can non-royals really marry in a palace?
Yes, that’s the business model. The royal family’s private wing stays private; everything else is bookable, and the Taj team’s entire craft is making a paying family feel like the royal one.
Is the palace wedding worth it vs a resort wedding?
The palace is the once-in-a-lifetime framing, heritage walls, dynasty provenance, and the photographs that never need filters. The resort is easier logistics at a fraction of the cost. Both are defensible; only one gets photographed for a century.
