The Pushkar Camel Fair — tens of thousands of camels, horses and cattle trading on the desert’s edge, followed by a week of religious festival at India’s Brahma temple and its sacred lake, is Rajasthan’s most spectacular annual event. And Jodhpur is one of its natural launchpads: 185 km away, with direct buses and an easy road run. Here’s how to do the fair from Jodhpur.
What the fair actually is
Two festivals in one: the livestock fair (camel and horse trading, competitions, races, the commerce) and the religious gathering around Kartik Purnima’s lake rituals (the pilgrimage). They overlap for about a week in October–November; the camel-trading peaks first and thins as the pilgrimage peaks. Travellers who arrive for the livestock days and stay through the lake nights get the complete arc.
Doing it from Jodhpur
- The day-trip version: possible (3.5–4.5 hrs each way, see the route guide) but rushed; the fair’s mornings and evenings are its substance.
- The overnight version (recommended): bus or taxi out, one or two nights in Pushkar, return. During the fair, book accommodation months ahead; Pushkar’s beds multiply in price and vanish.
- The fair-season warning: the camel fair’s trading peak and the Kartik Purnima crowd are different weeks, decide which spectacle you want, then book that week specifically.
Practicalities
| When | October–November (Kartik month, lunar calendar — the year’s exact dates via Rajasthan Tourism) |
| Getting there | Direct buses from Jodhpur (see the route guide); taxis for flexibility |
| Costs | Transport and fair entry are cheap; accommodation is the fair’s expensive line (peak pricing) |
| Photography | The dawn camel-ground light is the world-class shot; portraits of traders need the ask-first courtesy |
Questions worth asking
Is the fair too touristy now?
The livestock trading is genuinely commercial and genuinely local; the tourist layer sits beside it. Both exist at once, that’s the modern fair’s truth, and it’s still unlike anything else you’ll see.
Jodhpur base or Pushkar stay?
Pushkar stay, for the fair, the mornings and evenings around the lake are the experience, and the Jodhpur day-trip version misses both. Jodhpur works as the pre-fair base with a final-night return.
