Jodhpur sits at the junction of some of India’s most scenic rail country — desert plains, Aravalli climbs, and lines built for camel-caravan logic a century ago. These are the journeys worth taking for the window seat, ranked by scenery.
The scenic ranking
- The Jodhpur–Jaisalmer line. The desert crossing: scrub giving way to dune country, stops at towns that exist because the railway does. Not the fastest (5–7+ hrs), the most atmospheric, especially in the evening light (see the route guide).
- The Aravalli runs toward Udaipur/Ranakpur. The hill country’s green climbs (via Marwar junctions), the greenest rail scenery from Jodhpur, best in and after monsoon (see the route guide).
- The Vande Bharat to Ahmedabad. Modern comfort through classic Rajasthani-and-Gujarati country in six hours (the route guide covers it), scenery plus the year’s best seating.
- The Delhi overnight. Not scenic in daylight terms (it’s a night run), but the dawn arrival across the northern plains is a cinematic India introduction (see the route guide).
- The Nagaur–Bikaner northern line. Empty desert country, camel sightings from the window, and the Bikaner arrival, the connoisseur’s quiet ride.
Booking and class notes
Scenery argues for daytime journeys in window seats; book early (see the IRCTC guide for the foreigner’s path), choose window-side berths in sleeper (odd-numbered berths face the window in many coach layouts) or the AC chair cars on day runs. And the photography rule: clean the window before departure, shoot through with the lens against the glass, and accept that the best frames come at the curves.
Questions worth asking
Which single scenic journey from Jodhpur?
The Jaisalmer line in the afternoon light, it’s the desert’s own railway, and it delivers the state’s postcard from a moving window.
Are the toy-train-style narrow-gauge runs still around?
Rajasthan’s metre-gauge network has largely been converted, the surviving narrow-gauge experiences are elsewhere in India. The Jodhpur-region charm now rides on the broad-gauge classics above.
