Last updated: September 2026 ยท Method: guidance built from documented craft process and our blue-pottery buying guide. Process notes describe the traditional Jaipur-rooted technique that Jodhpur’s vendors source from.

Blue pottery is made without a potter’s wheel โ€” and that’s the first thing that makes it remarkable. The quartz-paste body is rolled flat like dough, moulded, glazed with cobalt and oxide pigments, and fired low. The result: a ceramic that is glassy, light and unforgiving, painted by hand in the motifs that made it famous. Here’s the process behind the cabinet of blues.

The process, step by step

  1. The body: quartz powder, glass, gum and.tragacanth mixed into a paste, no clay at all. The paste is rolled into flat sheets (this is why the forms are plates, vases and moulded shapes, not thrown vessels).
  2. Moulding: the sheets are pressed into moulds for every shape, the craft’s geometry lives here.
  3. First firing: the dried pieces fire into a pale, porous biscuit.
  4. The painting: cobalt and oxide pigments painted directly on the biscuit, floral vines, geometric borders, Mughal motifs, each stroke permanent under the glaze to come.
  5. Glazing and final firing: the clear glaze goes on, and the second firing fuses everything into the glassy finish. The low-fire body means cracks and chips are the craft’s constant enemies, the buying guide’s tap test exists because of this step.

Where to see and buy near Jodhpur

Jodhpur’s vendors (Shiv Kripa and the handicraft circuit) carry Jaipur-workshop stock; some demonstration sessions run through the craft circuits. The honest provenance note stands: the artisan base is Jaipur-rooted.

Questions worth asking

Why no wheel?

The quartz body can’t be thrown, it has no plastic clay memory. The rolled-sheet method is the technique’s adaptation, and it’s why blue pottery’s shapes are moulded rather than pulled.

Why do pieces crack?

The low-fire body is fragile by nature, hairline cracks from handling are the craft’s cost. Buy pieces that ring clean (the tap test) and pack them like the art they are.
