Last updated: September 2026 · Method: guidance built from our camel-safari research and documented camel culture. A species-and-culture guide.

The camel isn’t just an animal in Marwar — it’s the reason the desert was crossable, the currency of the caravan age, the dowry animal, the festival dancer and the state’s honoured beast. This guide is the camel itself: the animal, the breeds, the culture, and where travellers meet it honestly.

The animal

The one-humped dromedary; engineered by evolution for exactly this desert: water-storing (in the bloodstream, not the mythological hump), heat-tolerant, long-legged, and capable of days without drinking. The Bikaneri and Jaisalmeri breeds are the regional lines; the Nagaur fair and the camel research farms work the breeding science.

Questions worth asking

Is camel milk actually a thing?

Yes, camel-milk products are a growing Indian market (ice creams, powders), and the research farms push its health-case science. Try the ice cream; the milk is an acquired taste.

Are camel populations declining?

Yes, mechanisation and shrinking grazing hurt the national herd. The decline is why responsible safari operators and breeding programmes matter.
