Junagarh’s comfort was engineered, and the fort’s wells, fountains and channels form a water court system that air-conditioned the palaces centuries before the word. The wells come first, because everything else depends on them: deep water inside the walls was the siege-proof foundation of the defence approach, the reason a fort on open plain could wait out an army, and the well heads are visible in the courtyards today. The cooling is the elegant half: fountains and running channels through the pleasure courtyards, water surfaces and evaporative screens that cooled the painted halls by simple physics, moving air over water and through the jalis, so the same rooms that read as decoration were working climate machines. The read for visitors is the water-heritage : comfort delivered as engineering, visible in the channel grooves cut into the courtyard floors and the fountain basins set where the evening breeze crosses them. Stand in one of the water courtyards late in the afternoon, and the system still demonstrates itself.
The fort’s comfort came from hydraulics: the water system the courtyards were built around.
The system
- The wells: the deep water the defence approach depended on, siege-proof by design.
- The cooling came from fountains, channels and evaporative screens that air-conditioned the painted halls.
- The read: this is the water-heritage approach at fort scale, comfort delivered as engineering.
