📄 Image slot — the shila devi temple shrine inside amber fort with silver doors.

The Shila Devi temple inside the Amber Fort is the fort’s active shrine and the Kachhwaha family’s goddess temple, still worshipped daily rather than preserved as a museum room.

The goddess

Per published court histories, the idol was brought from Bengal by Man Singh I after his eastern campaigns there and installed in the early seventeenth century, a bring-home story the legend accounts cover in full. The goddess remains the dynasty’s deity, which is why the shrine sits in the fort’s first courtyard where the royal household could worship without leaving the palace.

The legend

Local tradition holds that the image was self-manifest from a “shila”, a stone slab, with versions differing on where it came from. The legend frame applies: attribute the tale, do not present it as settled history.
