Rose farming is a genuine local industry in the Pushkar valley, producing attar, gulkand and rose water from fields around the town.
The rose-farming tradition has a Pushkar chapter; this guide covers the valley economy.
The farming
- The valley: the Pushkar valley’s rose fields, a Haldighati parallel in a different valley.
- The products: attar (rose oil), gulkand (preserve) and rose water, per the shop guide.
- Where to buy: the bazaar counters, some selling farm-direct.
The valley’s rose economy parallels the better-known Haldighati farms in a smaller register, and the harvest turns the surrounding fields fragrant in the cooler months. The three products define the shopping: attar, the distilled rose oil sold in tiny vials at steep prices; gulkand, the rose-petal preserve that goes into sweets and paan; and plain rose water, the everyday version. The bazaar counters sell all three, some sourcing farm-direct from the valley growers. Reported quality varies widely between counters, so buy where the turnover looks highest.
