The Raja of Khetri’s patronage of Swami Vivekananda, including his support before the monk’s 1893 appearance in Chicago, is documented history rather than legend, and it is one of the best-attested stories in the region.

This post sets the patronage out, drawing on our merchant heritage post.

Why it belongs to Shekhawati is the copper. Khetri’s rajas drew wealth from the mining country described in our Khetri town guide, and that wealth ran through the same merchant and court networks as the rest of the region’s fortunes. The record trail, correspondence and published biographical writing on Vivekananda, is solid enough that this story passes the record rule cleanly: no hedging template needed, only the sources named. For visitors, the practical link is Khetri itself, where the raja’s hill fort and memorial structures give the history a setting, though the sites are modest and the town lies well off the main painted cluster.
