Last updated: October 2026 · Method: desk research — Phalodi’s role from our Khichan research (the nearest railhead and town) and regional geography.
Phalodi is the town the crane pilgrimage runs through — the small rail-and-trade centre 130-odd km north of Jodhpur that serves as Khichan’s practical base: the trains stop here, the market serves the villages, and the town’s own lanes hold a stepwell-and-haveli layer that rewards the overnight the cranes’ dawn timing demands.
What Phalodi is
A salt-and-trade town on the Jodhpur–Bikaner axis: the region’s railhead, a market for the surrounding villages (Khichan among them), and a keeper of old merchant architecture, painted havelis and a stepwell heritage in the compact old quarter. It’s also reliably one of India’s hottest recorded spots each summer, a meteorological fame the town wears with dry humour (our summer guide explains the geography behind it).
The visit
- Distance: ~130 km north (2–2.5 hours by road); trains connect on the northern line (see the booking guide).
- The Khichan base: the practical role, stay here (simple hotels, approx budget rates), dawn-drive to the cranes (20 minutes), return for breakfast.
- The town itself: the haveli lanes and stepwell in the morning light, a one-hour wander that the overnight makes possible.
Questions worth asking
Is the town itself worth the drive?
As a base for the cranes, yes; as a standalone, only for the haveli-architecture completist (the haveli canon covers the type). The pairing is the value.
