Last updated: October 2026 · Method: guidance built from documented Marwari language basics. A companion to the Hindi phrase guide.

Marwari is the language Jodhpur dreams in — a Rajasthani tongue with its own grammar, its own songs and about 8 million speakers, spoken at home and in the lanes while Hindi runs the shops and offices. For travellers, a dozen Marwari words open doors Hindi can’t. Here are the ones worth carrying.

The words that work

Marwari Means Use
Khamma ghani Respectful greeting The royal hello — already in our phrase guide; Marwari’s crown jewel
Ghani khamma The reply Returned greeting — say it back and the lane smiles
Su khabar? What’s the news? The everyday “how are you” — ask a shopkeeper and watch the door open
Bhalo Good The approval word — theek hai’s warmer cousin
Mhaane To me / for me “Mhaane chai” — the Marwari way to order
Kon? Who? Learned from every doorbell scene

Why Marwari matters here

Jodhpur’s identity is Marwari before it’s Rajasthani, the dialect carries the region’s poetry (the Maand singing tradition’s festival performances), its humour and its famous bluntness. A Hindi-speaking traveller is welcomed; a traveller who attempts three Marwari words is adopted.

The honest frame

Marwari is primarily spoken, not standardised in writing, variations run village to village, and the written forms travellers see are Hindi approximations. Use it as spoken spice, not grammar: three words said warmly beat thirty said correctly.

Questions worth asking

Is Marwari a language or a dialect?

Linguists classify it as a distinct language (a Rajasthani tongue with its own literature and media presence); politically it’s argued as a dialect. The safe traveller answer: it’s Marwari, and it’s theirs.
