Last updated: October 2026 · Method: route research from IRCTC/airline listings and traveller reports. Exact train departure times are deliberately not printed — timetables shift and aggregator listings conflict; the guides name the train types and point to IRCTC/NTES for live times. All fares approximate.
Almost every Rajasthan itinerary starts here: Delhi airport or the capital, then the 270-odd km to Jaipur. Five ways exist and they are not interchangeable — this guide compares them honestly and says which fits which traveller.
The five options compared
| Mode | Time (approx) | Cost (approx)* | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air (DEL→JAI) | ~1 hr flight + airport overhead | ₹1,500–3,500 | Connecting international arrivals |
| Vande Bharat train (20978, 6 days/wk) | ~3.5–4 hrs | CC ~₹950–1,100 / Exec ~₹1,800+ | The default recommendation |
| Other express trains (Ajmer Shatabdi, Adi SJ Rajdhani, many more) | 4.5–6 hrs | ₹500–1,500 by class | When Vande Bharat’s one train is sold out |
| Private car with driver | 4.5–5.5 hrs (NH48) | ₹4,000–6,500 one-way | Families, or continuing onward with stops |
| Bus (RSRTC + private) | 5.5–7 hrs | ₹500–900 AC | Budget, flexible timing |
*Ranges assembled from IRCTC listings, airline aggregator fares and traveller reports (2026); they move with season and demand.
Why the train wins by default
The Vande Bharat does Delhi Cantt → Jaipur in under four hours with a meal included, arriving mid-morning, a full first day in the city remains. Recurring caveat from traveller reports: it runs six days a week (one departure daily, the weekly maintenance day is the gap) and fills fast; book on IRCTC as early as the window allows (foreign tourists: the IRCTC booking guide walks the quota and registration quirks). The sleeper-class and general rail realities are covered in the sleeper class guide.
The arrival itself
- By train: Jaipur Junction sits at the old city’s edge, the station guide covers prepaid taxis and the auto walk-out.
- By air: Jaipur International is compact and ~12 km from town, the airport guide has transfer rates.
- By road: the NH48 approach is the state’s best highway; if a stop matters, the Neemrana fort-palace halfway point is the classic break.
Common mistakes
- Booking the last Vande Bharat seat a day before; sold out most days; have the Shatabdi as fallback.
- Landing in Delhi at night and driving; doable, but the highway truck traffic makes the train the calmer start.
- Assuming the airport flight saves half a day; with overhead it often saves nothing over the train (the arrival comparison runs the math).
