The block print on every jaipur stall — the fine floral repeats on white cotton — comes mostly from Sanganer, the printing village absorbed into Jaipur’s southern edge, where the Chhippa printer communities have stamped cloth for centuries. This guide covers the craft, the fakes, and the visit.

The craft, in five steps

  1. Design the blocks — teak carved one motif per block; a complex print uses a dozen, one per colour.
  2. Prepare the cloth — washed, bleached, starched; the preparer matters as much as the printer.
  3. Print — the artisan stamps the repeat by hand across long tables, registering each colour by eye; the speed is the disbelief moment for visitors.
  4. Dry and repeat — sun-drying between colours; the long drying rows are the photograph everyone takes.
  5. Wash and finish — the final washes set the dyes; fastness is the quality test.
