Bikaner is Jodhpur’s northern cousin — another Rathore stronghold, another grand fort, and a famous camel country — 250 km of desert highway away. It’s the one neighbour that doesn’t work as a casual day trip: the honest advice is either a dedicated early start with an overnight, or folding it into the Jodhpur–Bikaner–(Khichan)–Jaisalmer desert loop.
The route, three ways
| Mode | Time | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train | ~4.5–6 hrs | Sleeper upward, modest fares | Direct JU–BKN services; check IRCTC for the day’s timings |
| Bus | ~5 hrs | RSRTC + private, budget to AC | Frequent through the day |
| Taxi | ~5 hrs | Day-rate by operator (approx) | Only mode that makes the Khichan/Phalodi detour workable |
Times are platform ballparks; confirm on IRCTC/RedBus before booking.
What Bikaner gives you
- Junagarh Fort — unlike Jodhpur’s Mehrangarh, built on the plain, not a rock: white-marble palaces and Anup Mahal’s gold-leaf hall inside a sandstone shell. It’s the argument for the trip.
- Karni Mata Temple, Deshnok — the famous “rat temple,” 30 km south of Bikaner on the Jodhpur side: thousands of revered rodents, and a genuinely one-of-a-kind spectacle. It’s actually on your route — stop before Bikaner proper.
- The camel breeding farm at Jorbeer, and bhujia — Bikaner’s crunchy namesake snack, best bought where it’s made.
- The old city lanes and havelis around the fort for a late-afternoon wander.
The honest format
A single day from Jodhpur means 10 hours of driving for 3 hours of Bikaner — technically possible, spiritually hollow. Two formats that work: the overnight (afternoon train or drive, evening at the fort, morning for Deshnok and the lanes, back next day), or the desert loop — Jodhpur up through Nagaur to Bikaner, onward via Deshnok or the Phalodi road to Khichan’s cranes, and into Jaisalmer. That loop is the trip serious Rajasthan travellers talk about.
Questions worth asking
Bikaner or Jaisalmer if I pick one?
Jaisalmer, for most travellers — the living fort and the dunes outrank Bikaner’s offerings. Bikaner is for the second trip to Rajasthan, or the traveller who’s done the classics.
Is the rat temple safe/hygienic?
It’s a functioning temple, not a stunt — barefoot among the kabbas is the custom, and outbreaks of disease are not a documented feature. If it’s not for you, view from the doorframe; nobody will mind.
