Auto fares in Jaipur are negotiable in practice: meters exist and should be your first ask, but a fixed, agreed price before you get in is the reliable method, and the negotiation rules below keep the tourist premium manageable.
The meter first
Autos with functioning meters do exist and the fare structure is regulated, so asking for the meter is the correct opening move. When the driver refuses and quotes a lump sum, that is when the negotiation logic takes over: agree the destination and the full price before boarding, never mid-ride.
The tourist premium
The Pink City markup the scam guide warns about is real, quoted fares to foreign visitors running well above local rates. The standard fix is distance: walk a couple of hundred metres away from the monument gates and hail on the open street, where the first quote drops immediately, per recurring traveller reports. Ride-hailing apps give a reference price to negotiate against.
Day hire
- Full-day autos covering the Amber plus city circuit follow the day-hire pattern: agree the route, the waiting time and the total in the morning.
- Half-day rates are for five to six hours roughly; anything longer, price a cab instead.
- Keep small notes; drivers rarely carry change for large denominations.
