Plans change in the desert (weather, illness, a missed train)and Jaisalmer’s cancellation culture is more informal than the platforms make it look.
How it works in practice
- Hotels: small family-run places typically refund deposits in full with 48-72 hours’ notice, a phone call to the owner works better than an app request, and direct bookings negotiate more easily than platform ones.
- Camps: the December 20-January 5 window is the exception; peak-date deposits often go non-refundable at booking, read that line before paying, and consider paying a smaller confirmation instead of the full amount.
- Safari and day-tour operators: most hold dates without prepayment in shoulder season; pay on completion unless the operator is new to you.
When refunds stall: keep the UPI or transfer reference, give owners a clear account number in writing, and expect settlement within days rather than minutes, the check-in practicalities cover the deposit side at arrival, and the price calendar explains why peak-week terms harden.
