Jaisalmer is small enough that two days is the honest full visit — the golden fort with a city living inside it, the havelis, and one night in the dunes. This guide cuts the days so the desert gets its evening, .
The one structural fact
Everything in town is walkable from the fort, but the dunes are 40+ km out, and the desert experience (camp, sunset, the night sky) is an overnight, not an excursion. Plan day one in town, night one in the dunes. The camp guide covers the choice honestly.
Day one, the golden city
- Morning; Jaisalmer Fort (the fort guide): the living fort, temples, lanes and homes inside the golden walls. Two to three hours, mornings beat the heat.
- Midday, the havelis: Patwon ki Haveli first (the finest carving work), then the city’s smaller mansions if the interest holds; lunch and the 1–4 break.
- Afternoon; Gadisar Lake: the man-made tank with its temples and ghats; golden hour here is the photographer’s slot.
- Evening, out to the dunes: the Sam dunes guide or a quieter camp (the camp guide compares), sunset, folk music, the night sky.
Day two, desert morning and the return
- Dawn, the dunes empty. The camp’s best hour; camel ride if you take one (the honest welfare framing lives in the dunes guide).
- Late morning, back in town: Kuldhara’s abandoned village or the desert national park for geology-minded travellers, or the fort’s museum sections if day one ran short.
- Afternoon, bazaar hour: the fort lanes’ textile and craft shops; the bargaining method applies unchanged.
What a third day adds
The long-distance options: the crane country en route to Jodhpur, or the border-road desert villages. Verdict: Jaisalmer’s core is two days; the third earns its keep only on a longer Rajasthan loop (the Jodhpur leg or the Delhi connection).
The season rule
October–March only, realistically, the month guide is blunt about the desert summer. December–January nights at a dune camp are genuinely cold; pack the second layer.
