Last updated: September 2026 · Method: guidance built from our route research (the Jodhpur–Jaipur connection) and standard circuit geography. A planning opinion, argued.

The Golden Triangle — Delhi, Agra, Jaipur — is India’s most-travelled circuit, and it has a well-documented weakness: three cities of Mughal-and-Rajput palaces that can blur together. Adding Jodhpur fixes that. This guide makes the case, counts the days, and shows how the Blue City bolts onto the triangle without wrecking your schedule.

Why Jodhpur belongs on the triangle

The day-count math

Version Days Shape
The triangle, as-is 5–6 Delhi (2) → Agra (1) → Jaipur (2)
Triangle + Jodhpur 7–8 Delhi (2) → Agra (1) → Jaipur (2) → Jodhpur (2) → fly/train onward
The desert extension 10+ …Jodhpur → Jaisalmer → Udaipur → fly out

Two nights in Jodhpur is the honest minimum (our two-day guide justifies it); the return to Delhi from Jodhpur runs by air (about an hour and a half; see the Delhi route guide) or overnight train.

Our honest verdict

The triangle without Jodhpur is a fine introduction to Mughal India that under-sells Rajput one. If you can find two extra days, Jodhpur is the single highest-value addition to the circuit — more desert, more blue, more Marwari food, and the fort that many travellers rate above everything the triangle offers. If you can find four more, push to Jaisalmer; the loop closes like a story.

Questions worth asking

Doesn’t adding Jodhpur rush the triangle?

Cut a Delhi day, not a Jodhpur day — Delhi rewards depth less urgently than the fort does. The triangle’s Agra leg needs a single night; travellers agree more often than they admit.

Train or car between Jaipur and Jodhpur?

Both work (our route guide compares); the car earns its keep if Pushkar or Ajmer joins the itinerary between them.
