A driver for a day (or three) is the single biggest decision in a Rajasthan road trip after the hotel. Jodhpur is a good city to hire one from — compact, well-connected, with routes fanning out to forts, villages and dunes. This guide covers how the hire works, what it should cost, and where the arrangement goes wrong.
When a driver actually makes sense
- Day trips with thin public transport; Osian, the Bishnoi villages, Sardar Samand, Rohet (the day trips hub maps which routes need one).
- Multi-stop days; Mandore plus the lakes plus a viewpoint is three autoland negotiations; one car is one negotiation.
- Outstation legs; Jodhpur to Jaisalmer or Udaipur with a stop built in (the route guides compare car against train and bus honestly).
When it doesn’t: the old city on foot, the market circuit, anything inside the blue lanes where a car is a liability. The local transport guide covers those days.
The three hire patterns
- Local day hire (8 hours, ~80-100 km): the standard sedan/SUV arrangement, booked through the hotel or a travel agency. Recurring review consensus: agree the inclusions, parking, tolls, the driver’s meals, before the day, not during it.
- Outstation (per-km, usually with a minimum daily distance): quoted for the round trip even if you exit elsewhere; confirm whether the return-leg kilometres are billed.
- Tour-package drivers: bundled with guides and fixed stops. Convenient, but the fixed stops are often commission stops, the scams guide describes the pattern so you can decline politely.
Approximate day-hire economics (research-based)
| Arrangement | Typical range* | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Local sedan, 8 hr / 80 km | ~₹2,000-3,000 | Extra-km rate unstated |
| Local SUV / Innova | ~₹2,800-4,000 | “AC extra” in summer |
| Outstation, per km | ~₹12-18/km | Return-km billing, night charges |
*Ranges assembled from published agency rates and traveller reports; they move with fuel and season. Treat them as negotiation anchors, not quotes.
The questions that prevent 90% of trouble
- Is this the total, fuel, tolls, parking, driver food and stay?
- What’s the rate per extra kilometre and extra hour?
- Can I see the car and the licence before paying anything?
- Are the stops you’re suggesting ones I chose?
Solo and women travellers
Recurring community advice: book through a traceable agency or your hotel rather than a street approach, share the trip details with someone, and prefer the driver whose name and plate match the booking. The solo safety guide covers the fuller picture.
