Last updated: September 2026 · Method: desk research from documented dress history (the bandhgala’s Jodhpur origin, the riding breeches named for the city). A fashion-history guide with shopping notes.

Jodhpur has dressed the world twice, and both times the world took the name home. The bandhgala — the closed-collar formal jacket every Indian groom owns — was perfected in this city’s court dress. And the jodhpurs — the flared riding breeches worn by horsemen from Wyoming to Windsor — are named after this city outright. A guide for the fashion-curious, and for anyone deciding what to buy in the bazaars.

The Jodhpuri suit (bandhgala)

The bandhgala — “closed-neck” — evolved from Jodhpur court dress in the late 19th–early 20th centuries, when the Rathore court fused the Angarkha tradition with tailored English silhouettes. The result: a high mandarin collar, structured front, and a cut that moved from royal uniform to Indian formalwear’s most durable design. Today it’s the groom’s default from Delhi to Dubai, and Jodhpur’s tailors remain among its best sources — the city’s tailor shops around the old city and Sojati Gate cut bandhgalas in days (approx pricing by fabric and lining; bargained like everything here).

The jodhpur breeches

The riding world’s jodhpurs — wide at the thigh, snug to the ankle, reinforced at the knee — were born of Marwar’s cavalry dress and rode into English equestrian fashion via polo and the imperial circuit. The name is the city’s signature on global sportswear; equestrian shops worldwide still sell “jodhpurs” with no idea they’re wearing a place. Fittingly, the Marwari horse that inspired them is from here too.

Questions worth asking

Bandhgala vs sherwani?

The bandhgala is the shorter, structured jacket (daywear to semi-formal); the sherwani is the long, embellished wedding coat. Grooms wear sherwanis; Jodhpur invented the jacket you’ll wear to every other occasion.

Can women order tailored pieces?

Yes — the tailors cut kurtas, bandhgalas and coats for all comers; the bazaars’ fabric shops supply the material (see the textile guide).
