Last updated: September 2026 · Method: desk research from tourism sources (boating timings and fees approx — they shift with season and water level). Built 1872 by Pratap Singh; 8–9 km west of the city.
Kaylana is Jodhpur’s sunset lake: an artificial reservoir built in 1872, spread against hills 8–9 km west of the city, where the evening crowd gathers for boat rides, snack carts and one of Rajasthan’s cleanest water-and-fort sunsets. It’s the locals’ evening as much as a sight — unpolished, unpretentious, reliably beautiful.
What happens here
- Sunset watching — the lake faces west, and the golden hour runs its full script across the water. Arrive 4:30–5 PM to claim a lakeside perch in season.
- Boating — pedal and motor boats run roughly 9 AM–6 PM (season-dependent); a lazy half-hour circuit with the city behind you.
- Birdwatching — migratory birds winter here (Oct–Mar); the reed edges carry herons, cormorants and the occasional flamingo report.
- The mela energy — snack carts, chaat, camel rides for kids at the entrance; it’s a picnic ground as much as a sight.
Practicalities
| Getting there | 15–20 min by auto/cab from the centre (approx ₹150–200); on the Mandore–Kaylana west axis |
| Entry | None for the lake; boating priced per ride (approx) |
| Best time | October–March; post-monsoon when the lake is full; evenings always |
| Combine with | Machiya Biological Park next door — park in the morning, lake at sunset |
Questions worth asking
Is it worth the ride out?
At sunset, yes — it’s the city’s best water-and-sky combination and the picnic atmosphere is half the fun. At midday in May, it’s a hot lake; the guide said what it said.
Food options?
Street carts and chaat at the entrance — good enough for the sunset picnic the lake was built for. Serious meals happen back in town.
