📄 Image slot — the vimal vasahi temple interior with carved ceiling dome and adinath idol.

Vimal Vasahi is Dilwara’s oldest temple, begun in 1031, and this guide walks through it in detail.

The detail

The sequence of a visit explains the temple’s reputation. You enter through a courtyard onto the hall, and the nine carved cells around the court each hold a tirthankara image under its own ceiling, so the detail begins before the main shrine. The famous dome stacks ring upon ring of figures, from dancers at the rim to a hanging pendant at the centre, and published accounts treat it as the benchmark all later Jain ceilings answer to. Every surface is worked: the pillars, the doorways, the fretted windows that feed dim light into the hall. Because 1031 makes this the anchor date for the whole complex, the comparison with Luna Vasahi next door is the natural way to read it: same marble, same grammar, two centuries of refinement between them. Take your time here first; the complex only gets denser.
