The Pushkar Camel Fair is two events in one: a working livestock market and a cultural festival that wraps around it, peaking at different moments.
The Pushkar Camel Fair is two events in one: the livestock trading and the cultural festival that wraps around it.
The two worlds
| World | What happens | When | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Livestock trading | Camel, cattle and horse sales, the working-camel economy at its largest | First week of Kartik (Oct-Nov) | |||
| Cultural festival | The folk performances, camel races, moustache contests and hot-air balloons | Last 3-4 days, peaking at Kartik Purnima |
The visitor’s choice: the trading days are the real thing and the festival days are the spectacle, as the compare guide explains.
The split decides your dates. The trading days in the first week of Kartik are the real thing, when camel, cattle and horse dealers do actual business across the fair ground and the crowds are thinner. The last three or four days belong to the festival layer, with folk performances, races, moustache contests and balloon flights building to the Kartik Purnima bath. Visitors who want authenticity should come early; visitors who want spectacle should come late; the sweet spot for both is the transition in between, before the final nights price out the town.
