Last updated: September 2026 · Method: desk research from pilgrimage and folk-deity sources. The Ramdevra fair’s dates move with the lunar calendar — verify yearly. Pair with the folk-deities guide.
Ramdevra is the pilgrimage town where Ramdevji — the 14th-century ruler-saint venerated by Hindus and Muslims alike as Ramshah Pir, took samadhi. His shrine 160 km northwest of Jodhpur draws lakhs of pilgrims yearly, and the town exists for that devotion. For travellers on the Jaisalmer road, it’s the folk-faith equivalent of Khichan: a genuine pilgrimage, not a monument.
What’s here
The Ramdevji shrine complex; the samadhi, the gates, the chronicled miracles, and the atmosphere of a saint loved across communities (his followers included Muslims, and his five disciples’ tombs share the site). The Ramdevra fair (Bhadrapada, Aug–Sep, lunar-dated) draws the year’s biggest pilgrim waves, the Jaisalmer road fills with walking and vehicular processions.
Practicalities
- Distance: ~160 km from Jodhpur on the Jaisalmer road; 3 hrs by car; trains stop at Ramdevra station.
- When: year-round darshan; the fair in Aug–Sep (lunar dates, verify yearly).
- Etiquette: the same respect frame as every shrine, shoes off at the sanctum, modest dress, no photography inside without asking.
- Pairing: the Khichan cranes sit on the same road, the faith-and-wildlife day trip.
Questions worth asking
Is the fair overwhelming for visitors?
Intense, lakhs of pilgrims, camps, processions. Attend it if you’re drawn to mass devotion at full volume; visit the shrine quietly in the off-fair months otherwise.
