Shekhawati’s forts are modest fortified residences and hill structures rather than Rajasthan’s great citadels, and the best known of them now serve the region as heritage hotels.

Modesty is the point, so this is a list, not a ranking, next to the structures in our Ranthambhore fort guide.

Three kinds of structure make up the list. The hotel forts, above all Mandawa’s, commonly dated to the eighteenth century, and Dundlod’s, survive because guests sleep inside them, and both admit day visitors to at least part of the property if you ask. The hill forts at Lachhmangarh and Khetri are backdrops and viewpoints rather than full monuments, and their condition and access vary. The fortified mansions and painted gatehouses scattered through the towns blur the category entirely. Treat entry questions as local ones: some structures welcome visitors, others are private, and no published list settles it in advance.
