On the hills beside Kaylana Lake sits Machiya Biological Park — Jodhpur’s small, well-kept zoo-safari hybrid, home to tigers, lions, leopards and deer in scrubland enclosures that echo the animals’ native Thar edge. It’s not a wildlife sanctuary, and honest guides say so; it is a genuinely good couple of hours, especially for families, and it pairs perfectly with the lake at sunset.
Practicalities
| Where | Adjacent to Kaylana Lake, ~8–9 km west of the city |
| Hours | 8:30 AM–5:00 PM, closed Tuesdays |
| Entry | ₹30 Indians, ₹15 students, ₹300 foreign visitors; camera ₹80 / video ₹200 (official figures) |
| Safari | Park safari vehicle covers the big-cat enclosures; tickets via the official Rajasthan booking portal (obms-tourist.rajasthan.gov.in) or the gate |
| Time needed | 1–2 hours |
What you’ll see
The park’s residents (150-plus animals) include tigers, lions, leopards, desert foxes, deer and antelope, kept in sizeable enclosures along the hillside. The morning hours are the active ones — big cats do what big cats do at noon, which is nothing photographable. The setting itself (Thar scrub on rocky slopes) makes the enclosures feel less concrete-prison than most Indian zoos manage.
The honest frame
This is a biological park, not a safari reserve — the animals are residents, not wild sightings. If you want wild blackbuck and chinkara, that’s the Bishnoi country; if you want to show a child a tiger at respectable range with shade and benches nearby, this is your morning. Families rate it highly precisely because it promises what it delivers.
Questions worth asking
Machiya or the Bishnoi safari with kids?
Both have fans: Machiya guarantees the animals (small children’s patience thanks you), the Bishnoi safari teaches the wild version. The strong family day does Machiya in the morning and the lake at sunset.
Why the Tuesday closure?
Standard Rajasthan park practice — weekly maintenance day. The lake next door doesn’t close, so Tuesdays become lake-and-lunch days.
