Last updated: September 2026 · Method: guidance built from our route research and itinerary logic. A planning framework built on our own city guides.
One week in Rajasthan is enough to meet the state properly — if you refuse the urge to see everything. This plan routes you through the desert heartland with Jodhpur as its spine: two capital cities, one blue one, one golden, and the Thar between them. Here’s the week, argued day by day.
The shape of the week
Delhi/Jaipur in → Jaipur (2 nights) → Jodhpur (2 nights) → Jaisalmer (2 nights) → out via Jodhpur or onward to Udaipur. The loop runs clockwise along the state’s tourist spine, every leg a manageable 4.5–6 hours, with Jodhpur sitting at the hinge (see our route guides: from Jaipur, to Jaisalmer).
The days, argued
- Days 1–2, Jaipur: Amber Fort early, City Palace and the bazaars, Hawa Mahal at golden light. Two nights — the capital needs its day and a half.
- Day 3, transfer to Jodhpur (morning train or car), with the afternoon for the Clock Tower market and the first rooftop.
- Day 4, Jodhpur properly: Mehrangarh at opening, Jaswant Thada, stepwell and market at dusk (the full plan in our itinerary guide).
- Day 5, Jodhpur’s morning, then the drive north: blue lanes at dawn, on the road by 11 — optionally via Khichan’s cranes in season — reaching Jaisalmer for its fort at sunset.
- Day 6, Jaisalmer and the dunes: fort and havelis in the morning, the Sam or Khuri dunes by evening, the desert-camp night that is the trip’s crescendo.
- Day 7, the exit: back to Jodhpur for the flight/train out, or push on to Udaipur (6 hours via Ranakpur — our route guide adds the temple stop) if your week stretches to eight.
The rules that keep the week sane
- Three bases, maximum. Every hotel move costs half a day; this plan spends exactly two moves.
- The desert night is fixed: don’t trade the Jaisalmer camp for a third city — it’s the week’s memory.
- Book the winter window (November–February) and book early: this route is the state’s most popular for good reason.
Questions worth asking
Udaipur or Jaisalmer for the extra nights?
Jaisalmer in winter (the desert is the differentiator); Udaipur in summer (the lakes and hills soften the heat). Our Jodhpur-vs-Udaipur and Jodhpur-vs-Jaisalmer guides argue both.
Can this run without a car?
Yes — trains and buses cover every leg (each route guide carries the options); the car earns its keep only if you want stop-when-you-please freedom.
