Last updated: September 2026 ยท Method: desk research from tour platforms and our day-trip research (Osian). Camp formats and prices vary by operator and season โ all figures approx.
The desert-camp night is the Rajasthan crescendo: camels into the sunset, folk music round a fire, dinner on the dunes, and a sky that does something urban skies have forgotten. From Jodhpur, the camping country is Osian’s dunes (65 km north) and the village belt to the south โ here’s how the night works and how to book it well.
The formats
- The standard camp night: pickup from Jodhpur late afternoon โ camel/jeep safari to the sunset point โ camp with folk dance and music โ dinner under the stars โ breakfast โ drop next morning. The Osian camps dominate this market (see the Osian guide).
- The luxury camp: Swiss tents with attached baths, curated dinners, and stargazing set-ups โ a different price band, same dunes.
- The village-edge camps: smaller operations in the Bishnoi country โ fewer dunes, more village life, often the friendliest prices (see the safari guide).
Prices and season
Camp nights have run roughly โน1,500โ3,500 per person in standard formats, climbing with luxury tiers (approx โ varies by operator, group size and season). October to March is the season; summer camping is a different and genuinely dangerous proposition (see the summer guide), and monsoon nights depend on the rain’s mood. New Year and festival dates sell out weeks ahead.
The packing and expectation list
- Layers: desert nights after folk-fire warmth drop cold โ a real jacket even in season’s shoulder months.
- Toiletries and a torch โ camp bathrooms are clean in the good operations but simple.
- Power banks โ charging exists in the good camps, but the dunes have opinions about sockets.
- The folk show is included, the magic isn’t: the performances vary โ read recent reviews for the camp’s music quality, not just its tent photos.
- Phones die in the cold and the dark โ the stars are the point; put the screen away after one astrophotography attempt.
Questions worth asking
Camp night or return to the hotel?
The camp night is the trip’s memory-maker โ cold, basic and unforgettable. The return-to-hotel version is for travellers who need their pillow; there’s no shame, but there’s also no stars-at-3-AM.
Osian camp or Jaisalmer camp?
If Jaisalmer is on your itinerary, camp there (the Sam dunes are the classic). The Osian camp is for the Jodhpur-only trip โ and it’s a worthy substitute.
