📄 Image slot — jaipur carpets and rugs buying detail with hand knotted pieces and grading.
Jaipur is one of India’s serious hand-knotted carpet centres, and the difference between a fair price and an inflated one comes down to three checkable things: knot density, material and the invoice.
The guide
- The knots: density is the core grading measure, counted per square inch on the back of the piece. More knots mean finer work and a higher floor price, the same wool-guide standard at its finest end.
- The materials: wool, silk and wool-silk blends each price differently, and blends get marketed under silk-sounding names. The materials-logic applies: ask what the pile is and what the foundation is, separately.
- Shipping: the courier guide standard applies. Carpets ship rolled, never folded, and a proper invoice with fibre content is what your customs office will want.
Watch the showroom pattern: tea arrives, a stack unrolls, and the pressure starts. It is fine to name a budget first and hold to it; the trade expects negotiation and respects a buyer who knows knot counts.
