Jaipur works well on a backpacker budget because the expensive layer (palace hotels, private cars) is genuinely optional: hostels, street food and shared transport cover the city, and several of its best sights cost nothing.
The guide
- The stays: the budget hotels and the hostel layer around the old city edges, where dorm beds put you walking distance from the bazaars and the rooftop cafes.
- The food: the street-food route keeps full days under the daily-budget approach most long-term travellers report; kachori breakfasts and thali lunches stretch furthest.
- The free: the free-things list, the same free-sights pattern: the facades, the bazaars, the temples and the lake views carry whole days.
Where the budget actually leaks: monument entries and auto fares. Buy the composite ticket if your list is long, share autos on the Amber run, and walk the old city; the hostels also run free walking tours that pay for themselves in orientation alone.
The seasonal saving, compiled from traveller reports: shoulder months (October, March) cut both hotel rates and queue times, while the December-January peak roughly doubles the dorm prices for the same beds. A flexible week in the shoulder season is the cheapest upgrade available in the city.
