April is the warning month: the mornings are still lovely, the afternoons have started to bite, and the summer strategy from our survival guide becomes relevant for the first time. It’s also the month of empty monuments, deep discounts and golden-hour light that lasts an hour.
The weather in practice
Typical April runs roughly 21–22°C at dawn to 37–38°C by mid-afternoon. The structure: mornings genuinely work, afternoons are for shade and pools, evenings reopen the city. Hydration stops being advice and becomes a schedule (see the summer guide’s rules).
What’s special this month
- Empty monuments: the year’s thinnest fort crowds; Mehrangarh’s galleries without the queues, blue lanes without the tripods.
- Deep discounts: the year’s first serious rate drops on rooms, including the luxury tier.
- Long golden hours: the low-sun window stretches; photographers who schedule around 6–7:30 AM and 5:30–7 PM win the month.
- Wedding-palace pricing: the palace rates fall from stratospheric to merely expensive.
The honest costs and crowds
Shoulder-season money: hotel rates drop hard, everything is walkable without a reservation, and the only scarcity is shade. The crowd calendar empties after the first week.
Questions worth asking
Is April doable without heat suffering?
Yes, with the restructured day: 6 AM starts, indoor middays (Umaid Bhawan’s stone wing, the fort galleries), evening returns. The travellers who fail in April are the ones who keep a winter schedule.
Do the day trips work?
The early-start ones do; Osian and the Bishnoi circuit before 10 AM. The lake trips (Kaylana, Sardar Samand) work as evening outings.
