Last updated: October 2026 · Method: guidance built from our village-circuit research. Homestay availability shifts — book via the safari operators and platforms; verify current options.
The village homestay is the Bishnoi circuit’s deepest version: nights in a desert home, meals from the family kitchen, mornings with the blackbuck, and the craft sessions that don’t fit a day trip. This guide covers the format, the booking and the etiquette (see the safari guide for the circuit).

The homestay formats
- The Bishnoi home stay: nights in the family compound, traditional rooms, composting sensible bathrooms, the kitchen’s food, and the desert’s sound profile at night (from the Guda circuit).
- The craft-village stays: the weaving and printing villages’ family homes, the Salawas and Kakani format, with workshop access included.
- The farmstay tier: the Rohet-country farmstays (Mharokhet-style), the comfortable middle between village-raw and hotel-polished.
Booking and etiquette
- Book through the safari operators or the platforms; the family homes rarely advertise; the operators verify quality (the chooser’s vetting logic).
- The food is the point: family-cooked Marwari food, tell the household your heat tolerance honestly (the veg guide’s rules apply; the cuisine is largely veg by default).
- The gift economy: bring something for the household, the mithai box or school supplies for the children; money handled through the operator if at all.
Questions worth asking
Village night or desert camp night?
Different nights: the camp is spectacle and dunes; the homestay is people and quiet. The camp guide and this page split the choice by temperament.
