Udaipur’s signs and guides use a small vocabulary that does all the work, twenty words, and the city reads itself.
The core twenty
- Ghat: the stepped water edge, bathing, boating, laundry and ceremony all happen at the ghats.
- Haveli: the merchant mansion, carved, courtyarded, now half museum and half hotel (the stay guide covers the second half).
- Pol: a fortified gateway, the city and the palace both count their gates this way.
- Chhatri: the domed pavilion, memorial first, photo-op second.
- Tanka, baori, mahal, jauhar, durbar, darikhana: the water rooms, the stepwells, the palaces, and the court words the museum labels assume you know.
Use: read this once before the palace museum, the labels stop being wallpaper.
