Last updated: October 2026 · Method: desk research — reign 1918–1947 per the consolidated Marwar list; the famine-relief construction story is documented at the palace itself and in our Umaid Bhawan research.

The last great builder of the Rathore line: Maharaja Sir Umaid Singh (r. 1918–1947), the king who turned a famine into a palace and a palace into jobs. Every visitor to Jodhpur knows his skyline — Umaid Bhawan is his monument and the family’s living house.

The famine-relief palace

Soon after his accession, Marwar was hit by successive droughts and crop failures. The relief project Umaid Singh chose was monumental: a new palace on Chhitar Hill, designed with the London architect Henry Vaughan Lanchester in the era’s Art Deco idiom, built from 1929 into the 1940s; employing several thousand workers through the leanest years. The means were the end: a famine-wage project that produced one of the world’s largest private residences. Completed around 1943, it was among the last great palaces built anywhere, see the full story in our palace guide.

The modernising finish

Umaid Singh continued the state’s twentieth-century build-out, hospitals, schools, the water and civic infrastructure a growing city needed, and steered Marwar into the age of electricity and the automobile. He died in 1947, on the eve of independence; his son Hanwant Singh signed the state’s accession, and the princely era closed within his family’s next generation.

Questions worth asking

Was building a palace during famine cynical or humane?

The account preserved at the palace and in state histories emphasises employment, relief through wages rather than dole, at a scale that fed districts for years. The architecture critic and the relief economist will argue forever; the palace tells its own version, and the museum tells it well.

Which architect, really?

Henry Vaughan Lanchester, the name sometimes garbled in guidebooks. The palace’s design authority is documented in our palace guide.
