Last updated: September 2026 · Method: guidance built from our transport research. The honest headline: Jodhpur’s city buses exist and serve locals well, but most travellers will never need them — this guide explains who does.
Jodhpur’s city bus network — low-floor services on the city’s core routes, run by the city transport service — is a genuine, cheap public system. It’s also a system most visitors will look at once and never use again, because autos and app cabs out-compete it for tourist geography. This guide tells you honestly when the bus wins anyway.
What the network covers
The core routes connect the railway station, the main markets, the new-city commercial areas and the outer neighbourhoods — the commuter geography. Fares are pocket change (a few rupees to a few tens, by distance — approx), frequencies are workable on main roads and thinner toward the edges, and stops are marked more by habit than signage. The old city’s deepest lanes have no bus geometry at all — nothing larger than a scooter turns there.
When the bus is actually the right answer
- Long, straight, non-tourist legs: station to new-city hotels, or across town on a main axis — the bus is nearly free where an auto costs ₹100+.
- Travelling light and local: budget travellers riding like residents will find it perfectly workable on the main routes.
- The experience itself: riding a full Indian city bus is legitimate cultural immersion at its most unscripted.
When it isn’t: door-to-door old-city travel (no stops near your haveli), luggage (no space philosophy), time pressure (autos go direct), and the day-trip legs — buses to Osian etc. exist but the intercity guides (like this one) cover the better options.
Practical notes
Pay the conductor on board (cash, small notes); board from the door the crowd boards from; keep valuables front-of-mind in crowd hours; and ask the conductor to call your stop — they genuinely will. Route maps live more in local knowledge than online; your hotel can name the route number for any main-road destination.
Questions worth asking
Should a first-timer use it?
Once, for the experience, on a short main-road hop with nothing to carry. Otherwise, the auto-and-app combination from our transport guide serves visitors better on every axis except price.
